Application of heat flux sensors in thermal energy efficiency research

2023-11-08

Heat flux, also known as heat flow density, refers to the heat energy passing through unit area per unit time. It is a directional vector. The unit in the International System of Units is W/ ㎡, that is, watts per square meter. Heat flux, sometimes called heat flux density or heat flow density, is the flow of energy per unit area per unit time .

A heat flux sensor is a component used to measure heat transfer, often used in industrial, scientific and energy applications, to estimate the rate of heat conduction or convection by detecting temperature changes in a medium . The principle is based on the law of heat conduction, that is, heat is transferred from a high temperature area to a low temperature area. These sensors usually consist of one or more sensitive elements such as thermistors or thermocouples . When there is a temperature gradient in the medium, the sensitive element of the sensor will generate a corresponding electrical signal. By measuring the characteristics of this signal, the rate of heat conduction or convection can be determined.

In industry, heat flux sensors are used to monitor the efficiency and energy utilization of heating systems. By measuring heat flow in real time, industrial processes can be optimized and energy consumption reduced. In addition, it can be used to monitor the thermal management of electronic devices to ensure they operate within a safe temperature range and avoid overheating damage.
In scientific research, heat flow sensors can be used to measure the thermal conductivity of materials, evaluate the effectiveness of insulation materials, and study the heat transfer characteristics of liquids and gases. The evaluation of the thermal energy potential of geothermal systems is an important issue in the development and utilization of geothermal energy. These data are crucial for designing more efficient insulation materials, improving heat exchangers and optimizing energy systems.

The Swiss tgreenTEG heat flux sensor - gSKIN-X O represented by Gongcai.com : uses 29 pairs of ultra-high sensitivity thermocouples to measure the heat flux through the surface of the sensor itself. The sensor area is 72 mm2 and the thickness is 0.4mm . The optimized polymer of Level -0 packaging and the metal structure of Level -1 packaging have ultra-high resolution of thermal energy and temperature differences, low intrusion and thickness , and are suitable for heat transfer monitoring.
